The atmosphere at the Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville was electric on the evening of November 1, 2024, as the Annual A Glimpse of Africa Gala unfolded. The event brought together hundreds of attendees and served as a powerful reminder of the resilience, richness, and unity within the African community in West Michigan. This year, the Gala, a highlight of the community calendar, underscored the vital role advocacy and cultural celebration play in fostering a thriving, inclusive society.

A Glimpse of Africa, one of The GABA Foundation’s valued Social Impact Partners, leads efforts to support African immigrants and refugees. With a mission to showcase, educate, and celebrate the diverse cultures of Africa while addressing critical disparities faced by the community, the organization’s annual gala is a cornerstone for its fundraising and outreach efforts.

Among the esteemed guests were GABA Board President Akindele Akinyemi and Chief Operating Officer Rhonna-Rose Akama-Makia, both attending to show support for GABA’s Social Impact Partner, A Glimpse of Africa.

The event began with warm welcomes and an immediate sense of community. Attendees were immersed in the sights and sounds of African traditions: intricate art displays, soulful music, and performances that stirred joy and pride. The room buzzed with laughter, conversations, and stories—each person contributing to the shared experience.

A highlight of the evening was President Akindele Akinyemi presenting the 2024 Most Inspiring and Engaging Small Business Award. This year’s honoree, Red Sea Beauty, is known for its organic, handmade cosmetics inspired by the wisdom of African women. As Akinyemi handed over the award, he emphasized the importance of recognizing and uplifting those who embody innovation and community spirit. The applause was loud and heartfelt, encapsulating the evening’s essence: celebrating progress while honoring cultural roots.

Chief Operating Officer Rhonna-Rose Akama-Makia reinforced GABA’s commitment to supporting impactful work. “Events like this are more than celebrations; they are platforms for connection and action. We’re here not just to applaud but to build bridges and find solutions that empower our communities,” Akama-Makia reflected.

The Gala’s influence extended beyond the night. Every ticket purchased and every contribution made directly supported A Glimpse of Africa’s mission to enhance the well-being of African immigrants and refugees in West Michigan. These funds fuel programs focused on education, job training, and health advocacy, ensuring newcomers thrive in their new home.

The Annual Gala stands as a beacon of hope and unity, showcasing the power of community to transform challenges into opportunities. It’s a reminder that shared culture strengthens bonds that reach far beyond one evening. As the night drew to a close, attendees left with more than just memories—they carried the inspiration to support, uplift, and connect, ensuring that Michigan’s African communities continue to grow stronger and more vibrant.

The GABA Foundation is honored to support such impactful work, reinforcing our commitment to creating pathways to success and celebrating contributions that enrich not just our local communities but the world.
