Grand Rapids, Michigan - On November 1, 2024, the Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville was transformed into a vibrant testament to African excellence as the annual A Glimpse of Africa Gala brought together hundreds of guests from across West Michigan. Hosted by one of The GABA Foundation’s valued Social Impact Partners, this year’s event was more than a celebration—it was a collective affirmation of identity, advocacy, and community resilience.

From the moment guests entered the space, the evening offered a deeply immersive experience. The Gala showcased traditional art, music, and performance from across the continent, weaving together cultural pride and community connection in a setting that was as elegant as it was energizing. The result was a powerful reminder: West Michigan’s African immigrant and refugee communities are not only present—they are leading, contributing, and transforming.

A Glimpse of Africa continues to serve as a vital anchor for these communities. Its mission—to showcase, educate, and advocate for African cultures while addressing systemic disparities—was on full display throughout the evening. The Gala functions as the organization’s signature fundraising event, enabling continued programming in education, health access, employment readiness, and cultural awareness.

Among the evening’s distinguished attendees were Akindele Akinyemi, President of the GABA Foundation, and Rhonna-Rose Akama-Makia, the Foundation’s Chief Operating Officer. Their presence underscored the deep partnership between GABA and A Glimpse of Africa, and reflected a shared commitment to building infrastructure that supports African and Caribbean communities across the Midwest.

A key highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2024 Most Inspiring and Engaging Small Business Award, which was presented by President Akinyemi. This year’s recipient, Red Sea Beauty, was recognized for its commitment to organic, handmade cosmetics rooted in the wisdom and traditions of African women.

“We must celebrate those who are not only building businesses, but building systems of care, sustainability, and community,” said Akindele Akinyemi during the award presentation. “Red Sea Beauty reflects the kind of vision that fuels economic transformation—and we are proud to honor that.”

Chief Operating Officer Akama-Makia echoed this sentiment, while also emphasizing the power of convening.

“Events like this are more than celebrations; they are platforms for connection and action,” said Rhonna-Rose Akama-Makia. “We’re here not just to applaud—but to build bridges and invest in solutions that empower our communities long-term.”

The Gala’s impact reaches far beyond one evening. Funds raised will support A Glimpse of Africa’s year-round programming, including culturally tailored job training, youth mentorship, health equity initiatives, and public education on African heritage and migration. Every contribution made during the event plays a role in helping newcomers not only adapt—but thrive.

For the GABA Foundation, evenings like the A Glimpse of Africa Gala represent a vital part of its broader mission: to support grassroots institutions that are building economic, social, and cultural power for African and Caribbean people in the United States.

As the night concluded, what remained was a shared sense of momentum. Guests left not only inspired, but connected—to one another, to the legacy of the continent, and to a collective vision of what’s possible when community leads with purpose.
